5-Day Big Five Safari

Tanzania safari
Comfort sets the tone on this safari. Each night is spent at a well-run lodge or a high-standard camp, ending with a night on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater so that you are first down onto the crater floor in the morning. Five days also allow a steadier rhythm than our shorter trips from the island, with a full Serengeti day and fewer rushed afternoons.
Before you set off, your guide visits you at your Zanzibar hotel for a briefing on the trip. The safari itself begins with a morning flight to Arusha and an afternoon in Tarangire. From there the route climbs over the Ngorongoro highlands, with a stop at a Maasai village, to two nights in the central Serengeti. Day four brings you back to the crater rim, and day five is a dawn descent into the caldera before the drive to Arusha and the flight back to Zanzibar.
Tanzania Tourism Safaris provides a private 4×4 with a pop-up roof for photography and an experienced driver-guide who stays with you throughout.
After breakfast at your hotel, transfer to Zanzibar’s airport for the one-hour flight to Arusha. Your guide meets you there, with time for a stop in town if you need anything, then drives across the Maasai steppe to Tarangire National Park. Spend the afternoon exploring the park’s baobab-studded hills and the Tarangire River, which draws elephant, buffalo, zebra and giraffe in large numbers in the dry season. Toward sunset, climb the Rift Valley escarpment to your lodge.
Drive through the farmland around Karatu and up to the Ngorongoro rim, pausing at the viewpoint over the crater. On the far side of the highlands, visit a Maasai village, where you can step inside a family home, ask questions and watch the jumping dance. Continue down to the Serengeti gate and on to Seronera, the central area where a permanent river attracts wildlife all year. Picnic among the kopjes, then game drive until it is time for your lodge.
Leave early with breakfast and lunch packed, so you can be out when cats are still moving in the cool of dawn. You may find lionesses on a hunt or hyenas returning from the night. Later, your guide heads toward wherever the wildebeest and zebra herds are grazing at that time of year, or to the river and kopjes if the herds are elsewhere. Return to the lodge near sunset, with time to sit by the fire before dinner.
Spend the morning on one more Serengeti game drive, with a picnic lunch out in the park. In the afternoon, drive back east toward the Ngorongoro highlands, watching for wildlife on the way. Arrive at your accommodation on the crater rim in time to watch the light fade over the caldera, some 600 meters below. Nights at this altitude are cool, so have a warm layer ready for the evening.
Set off around 6:30 a.m. to be among the first vehicles on the crater floor. Look for black rhino, lion, hyena and the elusive leopard, along with buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and elephant. Visit Lake Magadi, a shallow soda lake where flamingos and hippos can be seen. After a picnic lunch, leave the crater and drive to Arusha for the one-hour flight back to Zanzibar. If you would prefer a night in Arusha instead, we can arrange it at extra cost.
Per person in US dollars. The price depends on when you travel and how many travelers share the trip.
| Season | 1 traveler | 2 travelers | 4 travelers | 6 travelers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low season 1 Mar – 31 May | $4,079 | $2,719 | $2,463 | $2,292 |
| High season 1 Nov – 20 Dec and 6 Jan – 29 Feb | $4,294 | $2,862 | $2,592 | $2,412 |
| Peak season Now 1 Jun – 31 Oct and 21 Dec – 5 Jan | $4,771 | $3,181 | $2,881 | $2,681 |
Staying on the rim puts you minutes from the descent road, so you reach the crater floor early, when the light is soft, the animals are active and fewer vehicles are about. It also gives you an evening view over the caldera that you would miss from a lodge further away.
Both cover Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, but this one has an extra night, uses lodges and higher-standard camps rather than mid-range tented camps, saves the crater for the final morning, and includes a Maasai village visit. The four-day trip is quicker and costs less.
Yes. Day five ends with the flight to Zanzibar, but if you would rather not travel after a crater morning, or you are continuing elsewhere, we can book a night in Arusha for an extra charge and adjust your flight.

Excellent Trip of a Lifetime
Our family had the trip of a lifetime over the holidays. Our guides were amazing and always checked to make sure that we had everything we needed. In less than 2 weeks we got to do a short safari in Ngorongoro Crater, did a family visit as part of the cultural experience (my kids are still talking about how good the food was!!), visited Moshi for shopping, went to Dar Es Salaam and did a 2 day trip to Zanzibar. The logistics were all very smooth and the guides added humor and levity to the entire trip. We were in good hands and will never forget the hospitality shown to us while there. The best thing about the packages is that you can work with the team to tailor it to your exact timeline. We had to get back to work and school so opted for a short Christmas trip but we'll eventually go back to do a longer summer trip. Forever indebted for such a great experience!
Trip of a life time!! But why not go back?
BEST VACATION!!!! Eye opening, amazing, Beautiful and REAL. The safari was my favorite part. Seeing animals you learn about and dream of seeing right in front of your face. The food was great I ask you to be open and not get your norm. Safe? Yes. Of course there’s times you question a new country, area and people. There was never a moment I was in question of people or my surroundings. Next time I’m bring my kids they’re older and can help pay… hahaha. I heard it’s best not to go during the rainy Season it’s just easier and more enjoyable to get around. Just what people have said.
Great experience
Had a wonderful Safari experience in Nothern Tanzania. Got to see some Lions very closely. Best experience in a very long time tbh.
