Welcome to Serengeti National Park: Africa’s Wild Kingdom

If there’s one name that stands above the rest in the world of safaris, it’s Serengeti National Park. Located in northern Tanzania, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a vast, untamed wilderness that stretches over 14,750 square kilometers (5,700 square miles).

Here, lions roam freely, wildebeests thunder across the plains, and sunsets light the sky on fire. From seasoned wildlife photographers to first-time safari-goers, the Serengeti is a bucket list destination for all.

Where Is the Serengeti?

Serengeti National Park is part of the larger Serengeti ecosystem, which also includes the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Maswa Game Reserve, and extends all the way into Kenya’s Maasai Mara.

  • 🌍 Country: Tanzania

  • 🚗 Access Point: Most tours begin in Arusha, with flights or road trips into the park.

  • ✈️ Closest airports: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Seronera Airstrip (within the park)

A Glimpse into Its History

The name “Serengeti” comes from the Maasai word “Siringet”, which means “the land that goes on forever.” Established in 1951, it’s one of Africa’s oldest and most celebrated national parks.

The Serengeti became globally famous thanks to wildlife documentaries, conservationists like Jane Goodall and George Schaller, and of course, the Great Wildebeest Migration arguably the most spectacular wildlife event on Earth.
