Welcome to Tarangire: The Soul of the Bush

Located just a few hours’ drive southwest of Arusha, Tarangire National Park covers around 2,850 square kilometers and forms part of Tanzania’s classic Northern Safari Circuit. But unlike the Serengeti, it has a more intimate, off-the-beaten-path vibe that safari veterans absolutely rave about.

What makes Tarangire special?

  • Massive elephant herds — sometimes 300+ strong

  • Ancient baobab trees as far as the eye can see

  • A seasonal river that draws animals like a magnet

  • Over 500 bird species — a birdwatcher’s dream!

  • Fewer tourists = less traffic and more authentic sightings

The Elephants Are the Main Event

Let’s not sugarcoat it — Tarangire is elephant country. In fact, it boasts the largest concentration of elephants in Tanzania, especially during the dry season from June to October.

Picture this: Dusty plains filled with giants, mothers guiding calves, and bulls rubbing against ancient trees. It’s raw, peaceful, and absolutely unforgettable.

Why so many elephants? The Tarangire River, one of the few reliable water sources during the dry season, draws herds from far and wide. The result? Mind-blowing wildlife density.

Wildlife Galore: It’s Not Just Elephants

Sure, elephants are the headline act — but the supporting cast is nothing to scoff at.

Here’s what else you can expect to see:

  • Lions, often lounging in trees or stalking prey in tall grass

  • Leopards in riverine forests (though shy)

  • Cheetahs prowling the open plains

  • Buffalo, zebras, and wildebeest in huge numbers

  • Giraffes, warthogs, impalas, and eland

And if you’re lucky, you might spot:

  • Wild dogs (rare but occasionally seen)

  • Kudu and oryx, which are less common in other parks
