Overview

Elephants under baobabs on day one, the Ngorongoro Crater floor on day two: two of northern Tanzania’s best-known wildlife areas fit neatly into a short private trip from Arusha. It works well for families, and for anyone with a couple of spare days before or after a Kilimanjaro climb or a beach stay.

You spend all of the first day in Tarangire National Park, with a picnic lunch in the bush, then sleep at an upscale lodge in the green farmland between Lake Manyara and Karatu. Next morning you climb to the crater rim and descend for a full game drive on the caldera floor, where lion, buffalo, hippo and black rhino share the grassland, and a hot lunch is served in the crater. On the way back, stop at a Maasai village to hear about family life, cattle and traditions, then return to Arusha or the airport.

Tanzania Tourism Safaris keeps the vehicle and guide private to your group. The lodge is a comfortable step up from standard mid-range rooms, so the one night on the road feels restful rather than rushed.

Day by day

  1. Day 1 A Full Day Among Tarangire’s Elephants Stay Upscale lodge in the Lake Manyara or Karatu areaMeals Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, your guide picks you up in Arusha for the drive of about two hours to Tarangire National Park. Spend the whole day exploring. The Tarangire River draws elephants, zebra, wildebeest and buffalo, especially in the dry months, and the park’s huge baobabs make striking photographs. Watch, too, for lions resting in the shade and, with luck, the shy fringe-eared oryx or greater kudu. Lunch is a picnic at a scenic spot. Late in the afternoon, drive on to your lodge for dinner.

  2. Day 2 Crater Floor, Maasai Village and Back to Arusha Meals Breakfast, Lunch

Breakfast early, then climb through the forest to the crater rim and pause at the viewpoint before descending. The caldera floor holds a dense population of wildlife all year: look for lion, spotted hyena, golden jackal, elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, eland and the black rhino the crater is known for. A hot lunch is served at a picnic site on the floor. In the late afternoon, visit a Maasai village to learn about their homes, herds and daily lives, then return to Arusha or the airport.

Questions about this safari

Is this a luxury safari?

It sits between mid-range and luxury. You spend the night at an upscale lodge with comfortable, well-appointed rooms rather than a top-tier camp on the crater rim. If you would like to stay right on the rim or upgrade your room, ask us and we will quote the difference.

Can children join this trip?

Yes. Two days is a manageable length for younger travelers, and the pop-up roof lets everyone stand and watch. The days are long, so bring snacks, books and a pillow for the drives. The final price depends on the children’s ages; let us know them when you inquire.

How long are we inside the Ngorongoro Crater?

Most of Day 2, apart from the drive up and the Maasai village visit. Game drives on the crater floor are time-limited by the conservation authority, usually to about six hours, so your guide plans the morning to make the most of that window.
