5-Day Big Five Safari

Tanzania safari
Short on time but unwilling to compromise on comfort? Five days is enough for the two places most travelers picture when they think of Tanzania: the open plains of the Serengeti and the wildlife-filled bowl of the Ngorongoro Crater. Two full nights in the middle of the Serengeti give you a real chance to settle in, follow the big cats and watch the plains change with the light, rather than rushing through.
Nights are spent in hand-picked luxury properties: a refined hotel in Arusha, a luxury tented lodge in the central Serengeti and a lodge or camp right on the crater rim. Sleeping on the rim pays off on the last morning, because you can be down on the crater floor early, when the animals are most active and few other vehicles have arrived.
Tanzania Tourism Safaris runs the trip privately in a 4×4 Land Cruiser with an English-speaking guide. Meals are included as listed, along with local alcoholic and soft drinks, and the safari can run for a single traveler.
Your guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and drives you to your hotel in Arusha. Depending on when you land, spend the rest of the day at your own pace: rest after the flight, take a walk around town, try a few local dishes or sit down with your guide to talk through the days ahead. Arusha lies at the foot of Mount Meru and is the gateway to the northern parks, so it makes a comfortable base for adjusting to the time zone.
Leave after breakfast for the longest drive of the trip. The road passes farmland around Karatu, climbs through the forested highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and then drops onto the short-grass plains that lead into Serengeti National Park. Once inside the park, the drive becomes a game drive, so keep your camera close. You reach the central Serengeti in the afternoon and check in to your tented lodge, which puts you in the middle of the park for tomorrow.
With a full day to spend, your guide plans the route around what is happening on the plains. The Seronera River valley is known for lions and leopards resting in the trees along its banks, while granite kopjes give cheetahs and lion prides a lookout. Hippo pools, giraffes, buffalo, elephants, topi and gazelles fill in the rest of the day. In some months the migrating herds pass through the central plains as well; at other times the resident wildlife keeps you busy.
Head out after breakfast for a last half-day game drive, then stop for a picnic lunch in the park before turning east. The road leaves the plains at Naabi Hill and climbs back into the cooler highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You reach the crater rim late in the afternoon, in time to watch the light fade over the caldera from your lodge or camp. Evenings up here are chilly, so keep a warm layer within reach.
Because you slept on the rim, you can descend early and reach the crater floor ahead of most other vehicles, when lions, hyenas and grazing herds are at their most active. The caldera holds buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippos and a small population of black rhino, and flamingos often gather on its soda lake. Later, visit a Maasai village, meet an elder and try your hand at the beaded jewelry the community is known for, then drive back to Arusha or the airport.

It takes most of day two. The road is paved as far as the Ngorongoro highlands and becomes a gravel track beyond, and you stop for breaks and photos along the way. Once you enter the Serengeti, the last stretch doubles as a game drive, so the time on the road is not wasted.
The Big Five safari adds Tarangire and Olduvai Gorge and spends one night in the Serengeti. This trip skips Tarangire to give you two full nights in the central Serengeti, uses luxury properties throughout, including a refined hotel in Arusha, and includes local drinks with meals.
Yes. A dawn balloon flight over the central Serengeti fits well on day three, the morning you wake up in the park. It is an optional extra at additional cost, and flights depend on the weather, so let us know when you book and we will include it in your quote.

Excellent Trip of a Lifetime
Our family had the trip of a lifetime over the holidays. Our guides were amazing and always checked to make sure that we had everything we needed. In less than 2 weeks we got to do a short safari in Ngorongoro Crater, did a family visit as part of the cultural experience (my kids are still talking about how good the food was!!), visited Moshi for shopping, went to Dar Es Salaam and did a 2 day trip to Zanzibar. The logistics were all very smooth and the guides added humor and levity to the entire trip. We were in good hands and will never forget the hospitality shown to us while there. The best thing about the packages is that you can work with the team to tailor it to your exact timeline. We had to get back to work and school so opted for a short Christmas trip but we'll eventually go back to do a longer summer trip. Forever indebted for such a great experience!
Trip of a life time!! But why not go back?
BEST VACATION!!!! Eye opening, amazing, Beautiful and REAL. The safari was my favorite part. Seeing animals you learn about and dream of seeing right in front of your face. The food was great I ask you to be open and not get your norm. Safe? Yes. Of course there’s times you question a new country, area and people. There was never a moment I was in question of people or my surroundings. Next time I’m bring my kids they’re older and can help pay… hahaha. I heard it’s best not to go during the rainy Season it’s just easier and more enjoyable to get around. Just what people have said.
Great experience
Had a wonderful Safari experience in Nothern Tanzania. Got to see some Lions very closely. Best experience in a very long time tbh.
It was an amazing experience!
