Tanzania safari
From about December to April, the wildebeest and zebra of the Serengeti gather on the short-grass plains of the south, around Lake Ndutu on the edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The grass there is rich after the rains, and in the middle of that season most of the calves are born within a few weeks. This seven-day safari is planned around those months, with two full nights in the Ndutu area so you can follow the herds and the predators that shadow them.
The rest of the week fills in the picture: an afternoon in Lake Manyara National Park, a night in the central Serengeti near the Moru Kopjes, an evening on the Ngorongoro Crater rim and a final game drive on the crater floor with a visit to a Maasai village.
Tanzania Tourism Safaris keeps this trip good value by mixing comfortable mid-range lodges and tented camps with upscale nights in the central Serengeti and on the crater rim. You travel privately in a 4×4 Land Cruiser with an English-speaking guide.
After you clear arrivals at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a short drive of about half an hour brings you to a quiet lodge in the farmland near Usa River, between the airport and Arusha. On clear days you can see Mount Meru and, in the distance, Kilimanjaro. Spend the afternoon by the pool or on a riverside walk looking for birds and monkeys.
Drive west to the Rift Valley and Lake Manyara, a trip of roughly two hours. After lunch, enter the national park for an afternoon game drive. The road winds from tall groundwater forest, busy with baboons and blue monkeys, out to open floodplain where elephants, giraffes and buffalo feed and water birds line the shallow soda lake. Your lodge for the night is close to the park.
Climb through the Ngorongoro Highlands and drop down onto the wide grasslands of the southern ecosystem. Ndutu sits inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, right on the Serengeti boundary, around Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek. In the migration months the plains here can be covered with wildebeest and zebra. Spend the afternoon on a game drive, then check in to your tented accommodation for two nights.
Today is about the migration. Head out early with a packed lunch and let your guide read the plains. Where the herds go, predators follow, so watch for lion prides, cheetahs and hyenas working the edges. If you travel in the calving weeks, usually around February, you may see newborn wildebeest finding their feet within minutes. The area also has resident elephants and plenty of birdlife.
Enjoy a last morning game drive around Ndutu and a picnic lunch, then drive north into the Serengeti National Park. The central plains around the Moru Kopjes, granite outcrops where lions often rest and klipspringers move over the rocks, are your afternoon game-drive area before you settle in for a relaxed dinner. This is the most upscale night of the trip.
Make the most of a morning game drive in the central Serengeti, then begin the drive back toward the highlands, game viewing as you leave the park. By late afternoon you reach the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, where it is noticeably cooler. From the rim, the crater floor spreads out below, and you may be able to pick out herds and the soda lake with binoculars.
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater after breakfast for a game drive on the crater floor, with a picnic lunch beside one of its pools. Buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippo and lions are common, and black rhino are present in small numbers. In the late afternoon, stop at a Maasai village for a cultural visit, then continue to Arusha or the airport, about two hours away.

December to April, when the migrating herds usually graze the southern plains around Ndutu. Calving tends to peak around February. The timing shifts a little each year with the rains, so your guide follows reports from the field to find the herds on the day.
That safari heads to the northern Serengeti for the Mara River crossings, usually in the dry season, and is priced higher. This one follows the herds on the southern grasslands in the green season, adds Lake Manyara, and uses mostly mid-range lodges and tented camps, which keeps the price lower.
You can, but the herds will be elsewhere for much of the year, so Ndutu would be quieter, with mainly resident wildlife. For mid-year travel, ask us to reshape the route toward where the migration is likely to be during your dates.

Excellent Trip of a Lifetime
Our family had the trip of a lifetime over the holidays. Our guides were amazing and always checked to make sure that we had everything we needed. In less than 2 weeks we got to do a short safari in Ngorongoro Crater, did a family visit as part of the cultural experience (my kids are still talking about how good the food was!!), visited Moshi for shopping, went to Dar Es Salaam and did a 2 day trip to Zanzibar. The logistics were all very smooth and the guides added humor and levity to the entire trip. We were in good hands and will never forget the hospitality shown to us while there. The best thing about the packages is that you can work with the team to tailor it to your exact timeline. We had to get back to work and school so opted for a short Christmas trip but we'll eventually go back to do a longer summer trip. Forever indebted for such a great experience!
Trip of a life time!! But why not go back?
BEST VACATION!!!! Eye opening, amazing, Beautiful and REAL. The safari was my favorite part. Seeing animals you learn about and dream of seeing right in front of your face. The food was great I ask you to be open and not get your norm. Safe? Yes. Of course there’s times you question a new country, area and people. There was never a moment I was in question of people or my surroundings. Next time I’m bring my kids they’re older and can help pay… hahaha. I heard it’s best not to go during the rainy Season it’s just easier and more enjoyable to get around. Just what people have said.
Great experience
Had a wonderful Safari experience in Nothern Tanzania. Got to see some Lions very closely. Best experience in a very long time tbh.
It was an amazing experience!
