Tanzania safari
Four parks, one of the world’s most important fossil sites and a Maasai village fit into this week without rushing any of them. The loop runs west from Arusha to Lake Manyara, on to two nights in the heart of the Serengeti, back past Olduvai Gorge to the Ngorongoro Crater, and finally east to Tarangire before you return to town.
Comfort matters on this trip. Tanzania Tourism Safaris books upscale lodges and tented camps, most with tented suites and private bathrooms, chosen for their settings near each park. Meals and local drinks are included, and you travel privately in a 4×4 Land Cruiser with a professional guide who knows the animals and plants of the region well.
The pace is steady rather than hurried: a full day on the Serengeti plains with a kopjes circuit, an early start on the crater floor when the light is soft, and an optional dawn balloon flight over the Serengeti if you want to see the plains from above.
Leave Arusha in the morning for Lake Manyara National Park, roughly two hours west at the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment. A shallow soda lake covers much of the park, and the forest, grassland and shore between the cliffs and the water hold elephants, giraffes, baboons and buffalo. Lions here are sometimes seen resting in trees, and flamingos gather on the lake in some seasons. Overnight at a lodge in the hills nearby.
After breakfast, climb through the green farmland around Karatu and over the Ngorongoro Highlands, then descend onto the Serengeti’s open plains. Your destination is the central Seronera area, where the Seronera River keeps water in this part of the park for much of the year and draws a good cross-section of Serengeti wildlife. The first game drive begins as soon as you arrive.
If you have booked the optional balloon flight, you lift off at dawn and drift quietly over the plains. Otherwise, set out after breakfast along the Seronera River circuit, looking for lions, cheetahs, topi, ostriches and Thomson’s gazelles. Picnic under large acacias, then spend the afternoon around the Maasai Kopjes, granite outcrops where rain pools and shade draw animals, and where lions often wait for prey coming to drink.
Take a final half-day game drive in the Serengeti, then head back toward the highlands. On the way, stop at Olduvai Gorge, where Louis and Mary Leakey and their team uncovered fossils that changed the story of human evolution, among them the skull nicknamed “Nutcracker Man.” Continue up to the Ngorongoro Crater rim and arrive in time for sunset and a quiet evening.
Head down into the crater at about six in the morning and stay for the whole day, with a picnic lunch on the floor. Permanent water and grazing support buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, eland, warthog, hippo and big elephant bulls, along with lions, hyenas, jackals and cheetahs. The crater is also one of the few places in Tanzania to see black rhino. In the late afternoon, climb out and drive to your lodge.
Drive east to Tarangire National Park, which follows the Tarangire River through acacia woodland and baobab-dotted hills. In the dry season, the river and the swamps in the south of the park pull in large numbers of animals, including some of the biggest elephant herds in northern Tanzania. Watch for greater kudu, fringe-eared oryx and the ashy starling. Picnic in the park, then continue game viewing through the afternoon.
After breakfast at the lodge, visit a Maasai village to meet the families who live there, see their homes and learn how they raise their cattle in this dry country. There is time for questions and photos, with your guide helping to translate. Then make the drive of about two hours back to Arusha, or straight to the airport for your onward flight.

It is a comfortable, upscale trip: well-placed lodges and tented camps, most with tented suites and private bathrooms, plus meals and local drinks. For the most exclusive camps and longer stays, look at our 9-Day Signature Safari Experience, or ask us to upgrade individual nights on this route.
The balloon flight fits on the morning of Day 3, your full day in the central Serengeti. It costs extra and has to be reserved in advance, so tell us when you book. Flights leave around dawn and depend on the weather on the day.
It is a short stop on Day 4, between the Serengeti and the crater rim. There is a small museum and a viewpoint over the gorge, and your guide explains why the site matters. It breaks up the drive nicely.

Excellent Trip of a Lifetime
Our family had the trip of a lifetime over the holidays. Our guides were amazing and always checked to make sure that we had everything we needed. In less than 2 weeks we got to do a short safari in Ngorongoro Crater, did a family visit as part of the cultural experience (my kids are still talking about how good the food was!!), visited Moshi for shopping, went to Dar Es Salaam and did a 2 day trip to Zanzibar. The logistics were all very smooth and the guides added humor and levity to the entire trip. We were in good hands and will never forget the hospitality shown to us while there. The best thing about the packages is that you can work with the team to tailor it to your exact timeline. We had to get back to work and school so opted for a short Christmas trip but we'll eventually go back to do a longer summer trip. Forever indebted for such a great experience!
Trip of a life time!! But why not go back?
BEST VACATION!!!! Eye opening, amazing, Beautiful and REAL. The safari was my favorite part. Seeing animals you learn about and dream of seeing right in front of your face. The food was great I ask you to be open and not get your norm. Safe? Yes. Of course there’s times you question a new country, area and people. There was never a moment I was in question of people or my surroundings. Next time I’m bring my kids they’re older and can help pay… hahaha. I heard it’s best not to go during the rainy Season it’s just easier and more enjoyable to get around. Just what people have said.
Great experience
Had a wonderful Safari experience in Nothern Tanzania. Got to see some Lions very closely. Best experience in a very long time tbh.
It was an amazing experience!
