Overview

After a week of dawn game drives and dusty tracks, a safari traveler’s body usually asks for one thing: stillness. This holiday answers with six nights in one place, at a premium all-inclusive resort on Nungwi Beach at Zanzibar’s northern tip.

There is no packing and unpacking here. A butler helps plan your days, including lunches chosen from a personal menu, and the kitchen works with the catch of the day: fish, lobster, crab and prawns brought in by local fishermen in traditional outrigger canoes. Beach barbecues and private dinners close to the waves can be set up for special evenings, and honeymooners receive a few extra touches.

The sea around Nungwi is clear and the beach slopes into deep water, so swimming is easy at most states of the tide. Dive and snorkel trips, sea kayaks, windsurfing and fly fishing are all on offer, and a library and spa wait for slower days. One included outing breaks the week: a guided day in Stone Town and on Prison Island, with lunch. Tanzania Tourism Safaris can link this stay to the end of any of our mainland safaris with a short flight to Zanzibar.

Day by day

  1. Day 1 Off the Safari Flight and On to Nungwi Stay Premium beach resort in Nungwi (all-inclusive)Meals Dinner

Whether you fly in from the Serengeti, Arusha or overseas, a driver meets you at Zanzibar’s international airport and takes you up the island to Nungwi. At the resort, your butler shows you around and runs through what the coming days can hold. Order a drink, find a seat that looks out to sea and leave the planning for tomorrow. Dinner is at the resort.

  2. Day 2 Sea Kayak and a Seafood Lunch Stay Premium beach resort in Nungwi (all-inclusive)Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Start gently with a paddle in a sea kayak over the clear water off the beach, where you can often see fish beneath the hull. Back on land, talk through lunch with your butler, who can suggest whatever came in fresh that morning, perhaps grilled lobster or prawns. The afternoon is for the pool, a nap or a massage, and the evening for a sunset over the sea.

  3. Day 3 Stone Town and Prison Island in a Day Stay Premium beach resort in Nungwi (all-inclusive)Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is your included outing. A guide drives you south to Stone Town, the old trading heart of the Spice Island, for a walk among its whitewashed buildings, mosques, churches and covered markets. In the afternoon, a boat takes you to Prison Island, home to a herd of giant tortoises and a reef good for a quick swim. Lunch is included, and you return to Nungwi in the evening.

  4. Day 4 Diving and Snorkeling the Northern Reefs Stay Premium beach resort in Nungwi (all-inclusive)Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The waters off Zanzibar’s north are among the island’s most popular for diving, and trips can be arranged directly from the beach. Snorkelers can join boat outings to shallow reefs, where coral heads and schools of colorful fish are close to the surface. Certified divers can explore deeper sites. In the afternoon, rest your legs with a book from the resort’s library.

  5. Day 5 Nungwi Village and the Dhow Builders Stay Premium beach resort in Nungwi (all-inclusive)Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Take an easy walk out of the resort to see a little of Nungwi itself. The village has a long tradition of building wooden dhows by hand on the beach, and you may see hulls taking shape in the sand. Browse the local craft shops for carvings and fabrics on the way back. If you would like to go further, a spice farm tour elsewhere on the island can be arranged.

  6. Day 6 Wind, Line or Lounger, Then a Beach Barbecue Stay Premium beach resort in Nungwi (all-inclusive)Meals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

For your last full day, choose between a windsurfing session, a fly fishing trip or a final, guilt-free day on the lounger. Late in the afternoon the beach gets its warm golden light, ideal for photos. Mark the end of the week with a barbecue or a private dinner set up on the sand, where your table sits just a few steps from the water’s edge.

  7. Day 7 Departure from Nungwi Meals Breakfast

After breakfast, say goodbye to your butler and the beach. Your driver takes you back down the island to Zanzibar’s international airport in good time for your flight home. If you would like to stretch the holiday, we can add more nights at the resort or plan another short adventure on the islands or the mainland before you return. Just let us know when you book.

Questions about this holiday

How do we get from a mainland safari to Nungwi?

Short scheduled flights connect Arusha and several Serengeti airstrips with Zanzibar. We time your airport pickup to your flight and drive you straight up to Nungwi. The flight is priced separately from this beach week.

How does this differ from your shorter Nungwi honeymoon?

Our five-day honeymoon splits its nights between Stone Town and Nungwi. This seven-day holiday keeps you in one premium resort for six nights, with butler service and more time on the water, and visits Stone Town as a day trip.

Is the water good for swimming at Nungwi?

Yes. Nungwi’s beach drops into deeper water than the east coast, so the tide has less effect on swimming. The water is usually clear, and the west-facing side of the point gives you a sunset over the sea each evening.
