Tanzania safari
A vehicle covers ground; your own feet, a paddle and a pair of pedals show you the detail. Here the classic northern parks come with a twist: alongside the game drives, you walk and canoe in Arusha National Park, walk the shore of Lake Manyara and take a treetop canopy walk there, and explore Mto wa Mbu village by bike or on foot. Your guide points out the small things a drive tends to miss, from birds and insects to reptiles and medicinal plants.
The big-game days are still here. You spend a morning in the Ngorongoro Crater, home to all of the Big Five, and two nights near the Moru kopjes in the central Serengeti before flying back to Arusha instead of driving the long road out. At Lake Manyara, a spotlit night drive gives you a chance at animals that only come out after dark.
After two nights at a country lodge in the foothills of Mount Meru, you move into comfortable tented camps with proper beds and en-suite hot showers, chosen for their low impact on the land. Tanzania Tourism Safaris arranges the trip privately. It suits active travelers and keen amateur photographers who want to get out of the vehicle now and then.
A representative meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport for the transfer to a country lodge near Usa River, set in gardens below Mount Meru with distant views of Kilimanjaro. It is a quiet base for your first two nights. Swim in the pool, catch up on Wi-Fi, or follow the trails along the river, where you may spot birds and a monkey or two before dinner.
Arusha National Park is close by, so an early start buys a long day there. Small as Tanzanian parks go, it packs in a lot: hippos in the wetlands, monkeys and colorful birds in the forest, and elephants, buffalo and antelope on the grassy glades. Today mixes game drives with a guided walk and a canoe outing on the water for a closer look. Return to the lodge for dinner.
After breakfast, drive west to Lake Manyara, set beneath the wall of the Great Rift Valley and known for its birdlife and large mammals. Arrive in time for an afternoon game drive in Lake Manyara National Park, where flocks of flamingos may color the shallows depending on water levels. In the evening, check in at a small, personal lodge near the park for two nights.
Start with a guided morning walk along the lakeshore, reading tracks and watching water birds from ground level. Later, a game drive through the park carries on after sunset as a spotlit night drive, your chance to look for nocturnal animals such as genets, bushbabies and hunting predators. Return to the lodge for a candlelit dinner and a well-earned rest.
A morning game drive leads to the park’s treetop canopy walkway, a raised path through the forest crowns where monkeys, tree squirrels and birds are easier to see. Next, stop at Mto wa Mbu, a lively market village, and tour it by bike or on foot with a local guide. In the afternoon, drive up to a lodge near the crater rim, close to the descent road.
Because your lodge is close to the descent road, you are among the first vehicles on the crater floor. The Big Five all live here, and many visitors see most of them in a single morning. After a picnic lunch, continue to the central Serengeti and your tented camp near the Moru kopjes, granite outcrops that draw wildlife year-round. Dinner is under the stars.
Today follows the classic safari rhythm, with a morning drive, a rest at camp and a second outing in the afternoon. The kopjes are good places to look for lions and leopards, and the surrounding plains hold giraffes, gazelles and elephants. During the months when the migration passes through, the herds can fill this area. Your tent has solar lighting and an en-suite bathroom.
After breakfast, transfer to Seronera Airstrip for the flight of about an hour back to Arusha Airport. From there, you continue to your onward plans, whether that is a flight home from Kilimanjaro, a few days on Zanzibar or a night in Arusha. Tell us your connections when you book so the timing works. On the way, look down at the plains and highlands you crossed by road.
Per person in US dollars. The price depends on when you travel and how many travelers share the trip.
| Season | 1 traveler | 2 travelers | 4 travelers | 6 travelers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low season 1 Mar – 31 May | $5,480 | $3,655 | $3,033 | $2,798 |
| High season 1 Nov – 20 Dec and 6 Jan – 29 Feb | $5,768 | $3,847 | $3,193 | $2,945 |
| Peak season Now 1 Jun – 31 Oct and 21 Dec – 5 Jan | $6,409 | $4,273 | $3,548 | $3,273 |
These are guided outings built into a classic safari, not a cycling or paddling expedition. The bike ride is a village tour of Mto wa Mbu, which you can also do on foot, and the canoe trip and walks are led by guides in Arusha National Park and at Lake Manyara. If you are unsure whether they suit your fitness, ask us before you book.
Less than on a drive-only safari of the same length. You still travel overland between parks with your driver-guide and enjoy full game drives, but three days include time on foot, on the water or on a bike, and the flight back to Arusha saves a long final drive from the Serengeti.
Possibly. The camp near the Moru kopjes sits in the central Serengeti, and the herds move through this wider area at certain times of year. Resident lions, leopards and plains game are present in every month. Share your dates and we will explain what you can realistically expect.

Excellent Trip of a Lifetime
Our family had the trip of a lifetime over the holidays. Our guides were amazing and always checked to make sure that we had everything we needed. In less than 2 weeks we got to do a short safari in Ngorongoro Crater, did a family visit as part of the cultural experience (my kids are still talking about how good the food was!!), visited Moshi for shopping, went to Dar Es Salaam and did a 2 day trip to Zanzibar. The logistics were all very smooth and the guides added humor and levity to the entire trip. We were in good hands and will never forget the hospitality shown to us while there. The best thing about the packages is that you can work with the team to tailor it to your exact timeline. We had to get back to work and school so opted for a short Christmas trip but we'll eventually go back to do a longer summer trip. Forever indebted for such a great experience!
Trip of a life time!! But why not go back?
BEST VACATION!!!! Eye opening, amazing, Beautiful and REAL. The safari was my favorite part. Seeing animals you learn about and dream of seeing right in front of your face. The food was great I ask you to be open and not get your norm. Safe? Yes. Of course there’s times you question a new country, area and people. There was never a moment I was in question of people or my surroundings. Next time I’m bring my kids they’re older and can help pay… hahaha. I heard it’s best not to go during the rainy Season it’s just easier and more enjoyable to get around. Just what people have said.
Great experience
Had a wonderful Safari experience in Nothern Tanzania. Got to see some Lions very closely. Best experience in a very long time tbh.
It was an amazing experience!
