Overview

Lake Duluti is a small crater lake on the eastern edge of Arusha, close to the road toward Usa River. It sits in a bowl of green forest, and on a clear day the cone of Mount Meru rises above the trees. It is an easy, gentle outing and a good way to fill a spare day before or after a safari or a mountain climb.

This day trip is about moving slowly. You paddle a canoe across the calm water with a guide, stop for a picnic lunch on the shore, then follow a forest path that loops through the trees around the lake. Along the way your guide points out the birds that hunt along the water’s edge and the monkeys that move through the canopy.

Tanzania Tourism Safaris collects you from your hotel in Arusha in the morning and brings you back in the afternoon, so there is no need to arrange transport. The trip runs with as few as one traveler, which makes it a handy choice if you are on your own or arrive in Arusha a day early.

Questions about this trip

Do I need canoeing experience?

No. The lake is small and sheltered, and your guide gives a short briefing and fits you with a life jacket before you set off. The pace is relaxed, and you paddle alongside the guide rather than on your own.

What should I bring for the day?

Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting a little wet. Bring a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and a light layer, plus binoculars and a camera if you have them. Lunch and drinks are provided.

Is this a good trip for the day before a safari or climb?

Yes. It is close to Arusha, physically gentle and back in the afternoon, so it fits neatly into an arrival or rest day without tiring you out before a longer trip.
