2-Day Tarangire & Crater, Upscale Lodge
Arusha Tarangire Karatu Ngorongoro Crater Arusha

Day trip
Short on time but set on seeing the Ngorongoro Crater? A long, early day makes it possible. The crater is the collapsed cone of an ancient volcano, and its walls enclose a grassy floor with a soda lake, swamps and spring-fed pools. Animals live there all year, so even a few hours on the floor can bring a remarkable variety of sightings.
Black rhino are the prize, and the open crater floor is one of the more likely places in northern Tanzania to spot one. Lions and spotted hyenas hunt the herds of wildebeest, zebra and buffalo, hippos crowd the pools, and Lake Magadi often draws flamingos. Ostriches, crowned cranes and kori bustards stride through the grass.
Tanzania Tourism Safaris collects you in Arusha before sunrise and brings you back after dark, so plan this for a day when you have nothing else on. The trip uses a 4×4 Land Cruiser with an English-speaking guide, includes the conservation fees, a picnic lunch on the floor and a short visit with the Maasai who live in the surrounding highlands, and runs even for one traveler.
Your guide meets you at your Arusha hotel at first light. The drive west passes Maasai settlements and acacia country, then climbs through the green highlands to the crater rim, where the whole caldera opens below you. A steep track leads down to the floor for a game drive around the grassland, swamps and Lake Magadi, searching for rhino, lions and big herds. Lunch is a picnic at a spot your guide chooses on the floor. In the afternoon you climb back up, stop to meet a Maasai community and learn about their way of life, and then make the long drive back to Arusha in the evening.
Per person in US dollars. The price depends on when you travel and how many travelers share the trip.

| High season 1 Nov – 20 Dec and 6 Jan – 29 Feb | $735 | $450 | $370 | $344 |
| Peak season Now 1 Jun – 31 Oct and 21 Dec – 5 Jan | $816 | $499 | $411 | $382 |
It is enough for a good game drive on the crater floor, which is where most of the wildlife is. The trade-off is time on the road: the drive each way is long, so the day starts before sunrise and ends after dark. If you can spare a night near Karatu, the pace becomes much gentler.
The crater is one of the better places in Tanzania to try, but rhino are few and often keep their distance, so a sighting is never guaranteed. Bring binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens, as they are sometimes seen far out on the grass.
Dress in layers. The crater rim is high and can be cold and misty early in the morning, while the floor warms up by midday. A fleece or light jacket, a hat, sunscreen and closed shoes are sensible, plus a scarf if you dislike dust.
Yes. A short cultural stop with a Maasai community is part of this itinerary, giving you a glimpse of their homes, dress and daily life. Your guide will check the timing on the day so the visit fits around the crater drive.

Excellent Trip of a Lifetime
Our family had the trip of a lifetime over the holidays. Our guides were amazing and always checked to make sure that we had everything we needed. In less than 2 weeks we got to do a short safari in Ngorongoro Crater, did a family visit as part of the cultural experience (my kids are still talking about how good the food was!!), visited Moshi for shopping, went to Dar Es Salaam and did a 2 day trip to Zanzibar. The logistics were all very smooth and the guides added humor and levity to the entire trip. We were in good hands and will never forget the hospitality shown to us while there. The best thing about the packages is that you can work with the team to tailor it to your exact timeline. We had to get back to work and school so opted for a short Christmas trip but we'll eventually go back to do a longer summer trip. Forever indebted for such a great experience!
Trip of a life time!! But why not go back?
BEST VACATION!!!! Eye opening, amazing, Beautiful and REAL. The safari was my favorite part. Seeing animals you learn about and dream of seeing right in front of your face. The food was great I ask you to be open and not get your norm. Safe? Yes. Of course there’s times you question a new country, area and people. There was never a moment I was in question of people or my surroundings. Next time I’m bring my kids they’re older and can help pay… hahaha. I heard it’s best not to go during the rainy Season it’s just easier and more enjoyable to get around. Just what people have said.
Great experience
Had a wonderful Safari experience in Nothern Tanzania. Got to see some Lions very closely. Best experience in a very long time tbh.
It was an amazing experience!
